About me.

A man wearing glasses and a baseball cap is holding his finger to his lips in a thoughtful pose.

I’m Fred Muench, a clinical psychologist, father, partner, and lots of other things! I’ve had my own struggles with addiction, and the work of change shaped who I am and how I show up for others. Today, I work to help people build clarity and meaning in their lives so they can live with intention, especially when they’re caught in patterns they want to change whether it’s substances, screens, pornography, or other behaviors that feel out of control.

The Professional Me

I recently stepped down as President of the Partnership to End Addiction, where I helped families support loved ones struggling with substance use. Before that, I led the Partnership for Drug-Free Kids as CEO and held faculty positions at NYU, Columbia, and the Feinstein Institute. My work has been funded by NIDA, NIAAA, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Google, Facebook, and Twilio. Here is a link to my publications (and below, a few of presentations over the years that I have on video at Twilio, O’Reilly Media, and MusiCares Grammy Foundation. I am also the Co-Founder of Clear30, a digital cannabis break support application. I am grateful to be doing this work.

The Personal Me

I grew up in a place that pushed me to grow up fast, often chasing excitement and using substances to quiet my mind or what I didn’t know how to handle. They felt great until they didn’t, and eventually I had to face the truth that there are no shortcuts, only acceptance of my situation, effort, connection, and a willingness to keep showing up, even when I stumble. Over time, life has become fuller by seeking connection with positive people. I’ve built a family, found community, and kept space for music, movement, and play. I don’t take myself too seriously, but I take your struggles and hopes seriously, and I’d be honored to support you in whatever comes next.
